HA3 Task 1 - Mark-making Portfolio

File

This is a quick portrait of an eye, showing the areas of light and dark, this took me about 5 minutes to complete.

This is a drawing where I was completely blindfolded and I had to use my memory to draw the person that I saw just before I put the blindfold on. This quick sketch took me around 2 minutes.

This is a drawing of a person whilst I was restricted to only use my left hand, which was my weakest hand as I am originally right handed. This took me around 2 minutes to finish.

This is a drawing where I was only allowed to touch the paper with my pen only once. This means that I cannot lift my pen off the paper which will cause me to use unnecessary lines and it also slows me down as I have to use certain routes of where my pen has already been. I didn't fully complete this in 1 minute but you can get a rough idea of what this would have looked like overall.

In this, I had to stretch the face of a person which made the image look distorted in a peculiar way. This took me about a minute to complete.

File

In this exercise, I had to use a mirror whilst looking at myself to draw down what I see doing different facial expressions. This took me around 40 minutes to finish.

File

The idea of this was to drawing certain positions that people would usually stand in. This person is generally standing up normally and it took me around 2 minutes to draw.

This is another position that I drew, indicating a person who is walking in a usual motion. This took me about a minute to draw.

This is a figure of someone sitting down and this took me about 2 minutes to draw.

I drew this as a position of somebody sleeping. This took me about 5 minutes to finish.

File

These are various draws of my left hand, where I do different signs to indicate different moods. This took me about 20 minutes to complete.

File

This is an enlarged drawing which was drew based of a picture that was smaller. The grid lines helped me complete this enlargement and I think that this turned out well. It took me 2 hours to finish fully.

File

This is a "Mythical Creature", using different parts of animals to create a unique creature. This took me around an hour to complete.

The aim of this task was to photograph different poses of somebody forming different postures. I chose this picture out of the various ones, and then I traced this whilst adding extra detail to make it look a lot nicer and more realistic.

This was formed mainly by watching a tutorial found on YouTube. The aim was to draw the correct shapes on the characters making them seem as actual characters used in a manga. Both of the characters are emphasizing different expressions which also means that this task also consists of variety. This took me a full 2 hours to finish.

File

These are basic silhouettes of the shapes that are formed when people are doing simple postures. the aim of this task was to focus on silhouette itself rather than detail and perfection. This took me about 50 minutes to finish.

This the letter F that I have portrayed using Isometric Perspective points. I used a 30 degree angle to give of this particular type of look and this took me around 30 minutes to finish as it was fairly complicated at first.

I have used a single point to give this letter M this type of look. This took me around 10 minutes to finish as the process was a lot easier to follow.

This is the letter X where 2 individual points have been used to give it a sort of angled look. This took me around 15 minutes to finish.

File

This was a lot more of a confusing process as I found myself making more mistakes but I fully completed this in the end. The 3 points made the task difficult but it gave the shape a nice 3D effect and it took me around 30 minutes to finish.

This was created using 2 points from both sides of the pages placed roughly in the middle. I followed a tutorial on YouTube to create this Space station drawing as it was in a lot of depth and it helped me complete some stages that I was confused about. I sketched this roughly in pencil and then I neatly went over it in pen, which lead to this task taking about 2 hours to complete.

File

This is a cone which I created using the gridded structure as it guided me and made the task easy resulting in this task being completed in around 10 minutes.

This was a very complicated structure of a torus, which is similar to a doughnut-like shape. This was very complicated in my opinion as I found it very hard to follow and complete. It took me around 30 minutes to get to this stage because of the confusion built up during the process.

This is a spherical structure that I had formed using a grid, which helped me quite a lot to gain this overall shape. It took me around 15 minutes to draw.

This was a very simple type of task, where I had to quickly draw a pyramid like shape inside of the grid. This took me around 5 minutes to finish.

This is a cylinder I drew using another grid and it took me around 10 minutes to finish.

In this exercise, I have use different patterns to give 3D shapes a realistic feel, and this took me around 20 minutes to finish.

In this exercise, we used a range of different objects to create a still image, where we used charcoal to show how the light and dark is shown in the picture. This took me around an hour to do as it was a very messy topic.

In this. I used oil pastels to create different images of objects/ environments around the college. this took me around 20 minutes to finish as I tried to add a sufficient amount of detail.

I have used soft pastels to give this image a more soft effect, which made it harder to keep clean and add more detail. This took me also around 20 minutes to complete.

I have created a range of various ideas using party blowers which was a task that aimed to stretch our imagination to its limits. this took me around 30 minutes to complete as some of the ideas I came up with were fairly complex.

This is a colour wheel I created to attempt to show what happens when a colour is added to another colour. The primary colours were initially combine to create secondary colour where on each one, more of one shade of a primary colour was used to make it look different. This took me around 20 minutes to finish.

File

This was a more complex exercise where I had to show the analogous colour scheme, where it took me around 30 minutes to fully complete and colour in.

This was a more simple task as I show the examples of complementary colours on different letters, overall taking around 20 minutes to finish.

This was another quite simple task as it consisted of used colours in the colour wheel that were all equally spread apart from each other. This took me about 30 minutes to complete.

File

This is a brush and ink piece of art of a landscape that was created by using the landscape surroundings of the college itself. There are 4 pieces of paper with different bits of art which all form together to create a full image. This took me around an hour to finish.

HA4 Task 1 - The Purpose of Concept Art

Exploration

Exploration is the beginning of where a character of a video game is born. This initially starts off with simple rough sketches, which are basically ideas of what the character could look like and what characteristics the character will actually have. Obviously, the character is going to want to fit in with the game and multiple designs of the character would be analysed and defined of both good and bad features that this character actually contains. This is great as the this can generate even more ideas for that particular character or even other characters within the game such as allies, rivals, enemies, bosses, etc.

The sketches are mostly going to be very quick with barely any detail consisted into the picture itself. This is because the developers want as many ideas as they can, in order to overly create a character that they think can be successful and lovable in the video game itself.

Here are some concept art designs that are at the first stages of being developed where they recieve fast and creative ideas;

This is concept art for a well known Pokemon nowadays which is called Torchic. As you may be able to see, Torchic does not look like this nowadays as they though that the design at the time didn't suit the character, most likely because it evolves into a complete beast that is extremely powerful rather than a really cute Pokemon which would be more useless. This is a perfect example of concept art as this was one of the many ideas that they came up with for Torchic.

As you can see, the concept art here gives us ideas of what the pokemon will look like at different angles and positions. This helps establish if the pokemon would need more ideas appiled towards it or if the design suits the game well enough for it to be approved.

In this, you can see how different versions of weapons are being created and developed, which is a great example as this shows how the artist creates multiple versions of an object to ellaborate and collect more ideas as it will allow the developers to make sure that the object is perfect for the game.

Approval

Approval is the stage of a design building up in steady progression, where the ideas are developed and adapted to suit the character in a better style. This is where the developers become more confident with the design, as they gather the best ideas together and decide which are the best suited to the character, regarding to what they think the audience will love. If the design is not fully approved, then they go back to create more ideas for the character. The Publishers and partners need to be alerted before the design can go into the third step of promotion.

Here are some concept art designs that are approved designs. ready to continue onto the next step;

Environment Artwork

This is some environmental art for blade and soul, which is highly detailed and fully coloured where the concept is ready to be approved. This design is ready to be used within the game and even maybe to be used for art used in merchandise.

Environment Artwork

This is some more environmental concept art from blade and soul, which shows the same type of style looking at detail and contrast which is great as you want the designs in games to be linked and connected so it all looks very natural and not unbalanced.

Lyn Designs

Here, you can see multiple characters which have been fully detailed and colours in their certain aspects where the design is ready to be approved and move onto the promotion stage. This design could be easily used for the game and merchandise as it suits the genre of the game and fans would most likely be willing to purchase.

Promotion

Promotion is where the design is finalised and released to the public whether it is through the official website or through mysterious leaks. This includes the design being in full colour and it is at a full standard where it can be used in the game. This means that the developers are highly confident that it would work in the game, as the ideas have been built from the ground up, stating many different versions of how it could have originally looked.

The design is fully completed and ready for use in the video game and for merchandise around the video game. Overall, this means that the design is ready for sales where it is used in aspects that revolve around the game and the products sold for the game whether it be things such as trading cards, figures, clothing. etc.

Here are some examples of some concept art designs that are ready for promotion;

Promotional Artwork

This is some promo art for blade and soul, where an aspect of basically everything has been used such as the characters, environmental art and objects. The art has been detailed to an exceptional standard, where it is promotional for the game and it can be used in merchandise in the sales.

Promotional Artwork

This is some more promotional art for the game consisting of different characters and weapons, which gives the game variety, customisation and choice.
